The only thing I changed was the amount of boiling water. The recipe calls for 1.5 cups of boiling water, but I think using a little bit more helps make the dough more consistent and smooth.

Of course, too much of a good thing can spoil it. On the last batch, I got bold and used 2 cups of boiling water. The extra water made the dough sticky. When the kids squished it in their hands, it left threads of dough all over their hands and table…and later this ended up tracking on the carpet.

When done right, this homemade playdough is close to the real thing. I’m not sure if it’s the best because I didn’t try the other recipes. It lasts just as long as real commercial Playdoh if you store it in Ziploc containers. Others have said that it will last up to 6 months if stored in airtight containers. But my kids play with their dough for an hour at a time, so it gets a little dry from use. I stored ours in empty Playdoh cans and the dough stayed fresh for two months.

Ingredients

• 2 cups of all-purpose flour
• ½ cup of salt
• 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar (it’s a powder found in the spice section)
• 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
• 1.5 boiling water (add this last)

Directions

1. Mix the above ingredients into a bowl. Then add 1.5 cups of boiling water.
2. Stir with a large spoon. When the mixture is cool enough to touch, knead it with your hands into a dough.
3. Then add food coloring.

Note: Here’s where my method differs. I used gel food coloring instead of the liquid. It will be messy, but it lets you reach the right shade of color for your dough.

If you want to use regular liquid food coloring, you might want to add it to the boiling water before pouring it into the mixture.
