George’s Pancake House

If you have ever been down to a beach near the South Carolina and North Carolina border, you know there is one thing to do at least one morning during your vacation, go to a pancake house.

Small showing of Pancake Houses at the Beach

I’m sure it is a thing elsewhere, but as far as I know, only Carolina beaches have pancake houses stretched along the highway like it was a gold rush on people’s stomachs. Most of the pancake houses are claiming to be the best in the area, the south and the world, so it does make it hard to choose. If you think about it, how many ways can you make a pancake to differentiate yourself from the other 10 pancake houses within view? The good thing is, this allows for a lot of competition to bring travelers a great and inexpensive breakfast. You know when Waffle House puts almost a dozen within a 50 mile radius, there has to be something good going on.

Needless to say, we drove down to have breakfast at one of the pancake houses closer to Sunset Beach called George’s Pancake House. George’s makes itself unique by having a Mediterranean feel to the decorations, because the original owner was possibly Greek. He would walk around and chat up everyone in a nice southern charm meets Greek manner. We are not sure if George still owns the place, but recently it had an upgrade to the interior and the Mediterranean stuff was pushed to the back. It is now setup to accommodate as many people as possible, but not feel crowded. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t very crowded when we arrived.

TIP: if you love orange juice or just even like it, don’t get the orange juice. It is not orange juice. It is probably one of the worst orange juices around. The after taste is like brushing your teeth and then drinking some orange juice.

The linked sausage is great. It leans more towards a premium sausage and is good size. The pancakes are as expected as well as the toast. However, if you are used to picking out your own jelly package and using as much as you want, you will be disappointed. I’m sure they would have brought more, but the toast would have been cold by then.

The omelette was a very good size, reasonably priced for the amount of egg and cheese. The biggest issue I had with the omelette, it seemed to have the majority of it’s filling down at one end. It was like somehow, someone picked up the omelette like a burrito and let everything slide down. I’m not sure how that happened. Also, whatever they cooked on the grill, was in my omelette as well. So, if you don’t like greasy spoon type places, you probably should avoid going to George’s. I’m not sure if the other places are any better, but I was expecting a trip to the restroom before we made it back to Sunset Beach. Luckily, that was never a problem.

Overall, the place is very clean and the people are friendly, if they ever get around to your table. I’m not sure if they just had new people in the kitchen or what, but if the place was really busy, I have no idea how long it would have taken to get my omelette after the rest of the plates showed up. The final price for the bill was closer to a lunch cost than a cheap breakfast, so I’m not sure where the hand written bill went wrong. Maybe we’ll go back to George’s, because it is close to Sunset Beach. Maybe we’ll just drive a little further down the road.

At least half the family was enjoying their time at George’s.
