I've been traveling since before I knew I was traveling. My family would go camping in a large army canvas tent with cots stacked as bunk beds. Sometimes we took the dog and the cat on our camping trips. I have traveled to the UK and as far as Australia and taken a few cruises. Now it is time to take my traveling experiences and share them with my wife and children. I also post articles at https://steemit.com/@deanlogic

When we first moved into the house, my parents brought down some raspberry plants from their garden. They have a good number raspberry and blackberry, some of them wild. We Got a Switch!

Okay, so we upgraded from our Nintendo Wii-U, which we didn’t play a lot. Why upgrade? Well, the kids are a little bit older and it was snowy and cold outside. The Switch has been out for a just under a year. Until Christmas, it was very hard to get a Switch anywhere. As of a week or so ago, the Nintendo Switch has outsold the entire run of the Wii-U, which was 5 years long. The Switch has a long way to go until it can outsell the original Wii, which sold over 100 million units in its 6 year run. But, since the Switch is both a home and a portable game console, thoughts are that people are buying multiple console so that everybody in the household can have their own Switch. Well, for now, we are going to have only 1 Switch.

The Switch console as a portable console is about the size of a small tablet. The sound isn’t that great, but you can connect a headphone, which is how you will probably play it anyway. I don’t see too many people trying to do multiplayer on the tablet version. You can connect multiple Switch together for multiplayer, with each player with their own screen, which is probably the ideal way of playing. And of course, when it is docked in the console connected to your TV, you can play on your TV.

The console has a kickstand for playing in portable mode, which also hides a slot for a Micro SD card. The micro SD card allows for extra storage, including taking screen and video captures. That feature is how I added image to the end of my video and plan on using for game reviews, if the software allows for it.

The console comes with 2 controllers, called Joy Cons. They don’t have the infrared functionality of the Wii controllers, but they still have motion detection and HD audio. The HD audio allows you to do things like play a game that simulates marbles rolling in your hand, so that you can try to count how many are there. I’m guessing that will be useful in some games.

We bought an extra set of controllers and 4 steering wheels, which come in a two-pack from companies like YoK. I also about a Dobe controller charger. You can charge two controllers when the Switch is in the dock, but the Dobe controller has LED light bars to let you know if the controllers are fully charged or not. The final accessory we bought was a screen saver, because putting the Switch in the dock can possibly cause scratching, if you don’t do it carefully.

We bought Mario Kart 8 to play, since it was an easy enough game for the kids to play. Finding games for the kids will be the hard part. The original Wii came with Wii Sports, which is a great set of games that the entire family can play. I really wish that they would have made a version for the Switch. The Switch games are on cards, that look like fat SD cards, so you can’t play old Wii or Wii-U games.

I’m hoping that the family will get a lot of fun from the Switch and I hope to share our fun.

Gardens Update for 08 October, 2017

I haven’t done an update in a while, so this is the last for this harvest season. I may have another update, if I get around to preparing the gardens for next season.

I sort of neglected the gardens as they began producing less and I was getting busier with other things. However, the gardens were still trying to provide some surprises. Based on what went well and what didn’t, I have some ideas for next season. Of course, having ideas and getting them implemented is always the issue. I had initially planned to have a vertical garden wall this season, but I didn’t get it finished before the season started. I don’t plan on making a lot of huge changes next season, but I will at least try to be more organized with my planting.

The biggest surprise from the gardens were the raspberries fruit.  I pretty much stopped looking for any raspberries months ago, so it was a little bit of a surprise to see different plant with them.

The pepper plants were still growing and they even made some flowers.  I don’t think they will create any actual peppers, but it was interesting to see that they were still growing.  I guess I will have to start pepper plants much earlier next year and probably give them more sunlight.

I transplanted two fully grown tomato plants from the side garden to the potato containers. The potatoes, while looking promising at the start, turned out to be a disappointment. Since the bags were there and the tomato plants needed to move, I decided to replant them on top of the potato containers. I didn’t expect them to do much, but they did manage to produce flowers and some tomatoes.

The grilling porch grow bags suffered from the extra heat from the porch.  Even with all the rain we got in August, it wasn’t enough to make the carrots grow well. Next year, I will get the drip watering system setup so that they can get more to drink.  I would also like to build a table to hold the garden bags and I plan on getting larger garden bags.

The front garden did well, but probably could have done better with some better organization. The tomatoes were planted too close together and I probably didn’t dig deep enough for the roots of others. The wall of the house seems to increase the heat in that area, so things that barely grow in Zone 7b, probably don’t grow well in micro climate that is much warmer.  I plan on sticking to just 4-6 tomato plants next season and then add cucumbers, cantaloupe and pumpkins to grow along the ground and maybe a wire wall. Also, if I setup another drip system for the front, I should also be able to grow carrots again. The biggest issue with the front garden was pests of the weed, crawling and flying kind. I think I will switch back to the garden powder, which is what my parents use for the insect pests.  For the growing pest, I will just have to increase the size of the plastic area to prevent weeds and grass from growing into the vegetables.

This season was all about experimentation in the garden. Trying to see what would grow where. I did enjoy some rewards from the garden and I hope to enjoy even more next season.

And who knows, maybe my kids will be more helpful next season. My son helped plant flowers in his pre-school class, so he was apparently paying attention a little bit while I was working the gardens.

Bought a “new to me” Coleman RV

When most people hear “RV”, they think of a motorhome. A big A-Class box on wheels home used by old people and bands on tour. Well, “RV” or Recreational Vehicle has a wide meaning. Sure, you have the A-Class motorhomes, that are built from the ground up for the purpose of being a motorhome. Then you have the B-Class, which are usually vans converted to motorhomes and then the very popular C-Class, which are trucks that have motorhomes attached to their chassis.

Buying one of these puts you in a separate class of RV ownership to the point that they have clubs like the FMCA, Family Motor Coach Association.

I really want to be able to put this “egg” on my own motorhome some day. But, for now, I will have to wait.

The other option for RV’s are pull behinds. They come in two types, fifth-wheel or trailer. Fifth-wheel’s require a truck with an open bed. The bed has to be converted to hold the connection from the trailer to the truck. With this, you lose most of the functionality of your truck bed. While fifth-wheel trailers can be extremely spacious, even more so than an A-Class motorhome.

The other option, is trailer camper, which you need a hitch on your vehicle that can pull the trailer that you want. Trailers come in all sorts of sizes and configuration. It all depends on your needs and your budget.

For us, since we have two small children, we decided that it would be best to get a trailer with a bunk bed. Also, we didn’t want a very long trailer, since we hoped to park it in our driveway and still have room for our two vehicles. Also, after going through a search for a tow vehicle, we ended up with a Jeep Grand Cherokee and could only pull a maximum of 5,000 lbs. With that, we didn’t want anything to be over 3,000 lbs empty.

What we ended up with is a 2015 Coleman CTS 15BH Expedition Lite camper. The 15BH stands for 15 foot interior and Bunk House. The total length, with the towing tongue is about 18 feet. It came with some anti-sway bars, but I didn’t get those hooked up. Also, since we would be driving in the mountains, it was recommended to get a break controller to help with breaking, but I also didn’t get it hooked up for my solo trip.

I hadn’t planned on getting an RV site for my first trip and the camper didn’t come with the hoses for hooking up water and sewage. However, I did manage to hook up the electrical, which ran the A/C, refrigerator, radio and lights. It also runs the microwave, but I didn’t use that. The propane tank runs the stoves top and the refrigerator, if there isn’t any electrical hookup.

My first cooked meal in the camper was eggs. They went well. However, my second meal was hamburgers, which had issues. I bough some meat, but didn’t check to see how lean it was, so it made a mess on the counter.

The next evening, I put one pan over the cooking pan to cut down on the grease splatter.

Overall, cooking and keeping things cold wasn’t a problem in the camper. It took a little while for the refrigerator too cool down, but when it did, it was really cold. Cold enough, that I left food in it on the trip back and it was still cold when I took it out. Of course, you don’t run the refrigerator while you are towing, so I can’t do that trick on the way to a place, unless I hookup the camper at home and get the refrigerator chilled before the trip.

As far as sleeping went, it was a little bit more difficult. I slept on one of the bunks for the first two nights and it was hard. Not as hard as sleeping on the ground, but hard. I’m sure the kids will be okay with it. The last night, I slept in the bench/table area that turns into a bed. This will be the place that my wife and I will be sleeping, so I might as well get used to it. It was softer, but we will probably still need some sort of cushion to make it more comfortable.

The A/C had an automatic feature and it didn’t run very often. Camping in the mountains in a shaded area isn’t really a good test to see how well it works. It did cool off the camper and only ran on occasion.

For storage, there are plenty of places to store things, but we will have to be very organized on our trips. The pantry is big, but there really isn’t a place to store clothes. So, if we bring large suitcase, we will have to figure out how to store them were it is easy to get them. Also, changing clothes will probably only happen in the living area, so we better remember to close the blinds!!

For the first trip, that wasn’t very well planned, things went well. I hope that the family enjoys many trips in our new Coleman camper.

First Harvest: Cantaloupe

In my Front Micro-Garden I have a cantaloupe plant (or maybe plants) growing all over the place. With all the flowers that bloomed and with the help from a few bees, I have two cantaloupe growing and one of them was ready to pick. My wife read a tip on choosing cantaloupe, which was to pick them with a little bit of yellow, but not too much of a yellow spot. Well, about two days ago, the cantaloupe was mostly green and then it quickly changed to yellow. I was waiting for the webbing to grow all over, but I guess that is not going to happen with this variety of cantaloupe.

The result, as you will see, is a that the melon grew almost to the edge and the seed pocket wasn’t very deep. The taste was definitely cantaloupe, but not very strong. Possibly, having left it out for a couple of days longer put it in the “just a tad too ripe” category.
