I've been traveling since before I knew I was traveling. My family would go camping in a large army canvas tent with cots stacked as bunk beds. Sometimes we took the dog and the cat on our camping trips. I have traveled to the UK and as far as Australia and taken a few cruises. Now it is time to take my traveling experiences and share them with my wife and children. I also post articles at https://steemit.com/@deanlogic

Christmas Tree Reuse in The Yard

Making use of the Christmas tree after the decorations come down, besides just throwing it to the curb.

I planted cherry trees back in November. I got a Starkrimson Sweet Cherry and a North Star Pie Cherry from Stark Bro’s from my wife, Lisa, as a birthday present. Stark Bro’s posted a tip about recycling Christmas Trees as mulch. I figured, it was just as good as putting it on the curb for the city to turn into mulch with the trees and it would help me provide a little more protection from the cold for the new trees I planted. I live in Hardiness Zone7B and we are expecting a little colder than normal weather, including a couple days of snow this coming weekend. And, as the Stark Bro’s article points out, the pine needles will help break down the organic material I already placed down around the trees.

Preparing for the new season

Since it is the start of the new calendar year, it is a good time to start thinking about what to do for the new planting season. Of course, the planting season isn’t based off of the calendar, but it is close enough. I have never done any winter crops before and I’m not sure…

Yogi in the September Smokies

Growing up, my family would take camping trips all over the mid-west. I couldn’t name a signal campground that we stayed at, but I know that we most likely stayed at a camping place near some sort of activity. For example, we camped to visit King’s Island and Six Flags amusement parks.  The most I remember us doing at the campsite was sleeping, eating and sitting around the campfire. Being that we were there to go do something else, that was probably enough. Jellystone Park Camp – Resorts is kind of the opposite of my childhood experience. You can go to the camp and do all sorts of activities with your family, without really needing to go somewhere else. However, it does seem like the camp-resorts are located near other site seeing and activities.

The chicken or the egg? If you are old enough to remember Saturday morning cartoons and, in particular, Hanna-Barbera cartoons, then you know Yogi, Boo-Boo, and Ranger Smith and their constant battles for the “pic-a-nic baskets”.  You would think that this themed camping idea came from the owners of the show trying to cash in on the popularity. Well, according to the history of Jellystone, it was the opposite. Which always goes to show, there is always room for creativity to improve things. Anyway, Jellystone has been around just slightly longer than I have and that’s one of the things I liked about the camp.

There is just something about the feel of an old campsite. I don’t know how long Yogi In the Smokies has been around, but it has the feel of an old park. I’m sure it hasn’t been around much longer than late 80’s or early 90’s, but the structures seem older. Not to say it isn’t in good condition. The bathroom and shower houses were clean. The camp ground was very tidy, unlike the local residence homes on the way into the park. Play equipment seemed to be in working order.  The pool was closed, but that was probably due to it being in off season. While we were tent camping, the park offers cabins and almost every camp site has electrical and water. The other campers included tent campers, pop-up trailers and even a large motor home towing a trailer with a vehicle on it. Truly a camp-resort for any level. The camp was well wooded, the nuts dropping on the roof of the van was a continuous reminder. One border of the camp is the Ravenfork River. Not only giving the camp a secluded feel, but giving something for the kids and adults to play in during their stay. Of course, the camp-resort has plenty of activities for kids throughout the day to keep them moving.
