For our trip to Sunset Beach, we stayed at The Continental Motel & Apartments. This wasn’t our first time staying here, but it might be our last time.
The Continental Motel & Apartments is located on the main road heading into Sunset Beach. It is also right at the pier and boardwalk to the beach. All you have to do is cross the road and you are on your way to the beach. This convenience is the main reason we stayed at the Continental. With the ease of access to Sunset Beach increasing, the available parking has been decreasing, due to all the extra people coming to the beach. Even the resort back on the mainland stopped doing shuttle service to the beach, because the new bridge gives quick access at all times of the day. To reduce the hassle of dragging everything from where ever we found a place to park, we decided to stick to going to the Continental. It is also one of the cheaper options on the island, since the majority of the choices are house rentals.
As the name implies, the Continental is a motel where owners own the individual rooms. This allows them to rent them out, when they are not using them, but you still get the feel of a motel. They have a cleaning service and free wi-fi, plus all the other things you would expect from a motel. Since they are individually owned, each unit is a little bit different in when it was last updated and what furniture and such is found inside. They all have a screened porch, which gives the Continental a throw back feel to the time before air conditioning at the beach. It is more obvious how old the rooms are, when you get one with a window air-conditioning unit in the back room and a hole with a fan in it to move air to the front room. And, with window units, you get the noise. Granted, we stayed at a nicer and newer hotel in Ohio that had a much louder room unit. Also, since the concrete block hotel was probably built without any insulation, the unit never gets fully cooled off, no matter how long the air-conditioner runs. Beyond the loud droning of the cooling unit, the units are kept up nicely and the motel does have an outdoor pool that is kept clean.

Unlike a hotel, the motel has a bit of an issue with early cancellations. Our daughter, Kathryn, started to feel a bit under the weather and it basically got worse out in the sun. She had a little cold before we left, then it just got worse. Since we had already paid for two nights, we hoped that we could get the last night refunded. The person working at the desk told us that we couldn’t, because we didn’t cancel 48 hours in advance. However, according to their rules, if you don’t cancel 48 hours in advance, you would be charged one night. Well, we already paid for one night and would be paying for a second night that we wouldn’t be using, we just wanted the third night refunded. I can understand that each of the units are owner owned and so it is a bit harder to workout refunds, but giving that we would have already paid, they should have been nice enough to refund for the night we wouldn’t be there.
So, because of this issue and the cooling noise, we are giving up on The Continental. And, because of how crowded Sunset is getting, due to the new bridge, we are looking for new places to stay for our beach trips.
